Alterations in Antibacterial Activity of Amniotic Fluid by Meconium

Abstract
-Amniotic fluid had been known to have antibacterial activity. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of meconium addition to amniotic fluid on antimicrobial activity (against S. aureus, group D Enterococcus, and E. coli) in vitro.
Amniotic
fluids were obtained from 5 term pregnant women and mixed with meconium. The fluids were incubated for 24 hours after inoculation of bacteria and plate-colony count study was done. Bacterial growth curves in Mueller Hinton broth, amniotic fluid,
and
amniotic fluid with added meconium were compared. The results revealed that amniotic fluid has an antibacterial activity against all tested bacterial species. Also the study showed that bacterial growth rate was significantly increased with the
addition
of meconium into the amniotic fluid. However, differences in meconium concentration did not affect the bacterial growth rate. In conclusion, it is suggested that antibacterial activity of amniotic fluid may be inhibited by meconium addition and
meconium-stained amniotic fluid carry a high risk during perinatal period.
